New Kind of Network ICO: Company Review and NKN Token News Updates
NKN ICO: New Kind of Network NKN Token Blockchain Internet?
NKN, found online at NKN.org, is a project that aims to rebuild the internet to create an open, decentralized, dynamic, and safe platform that’s truly owned by the community.
NKN will rely on a feature called “Cellular Automata” to innovative on several major layers in the entire stack, including network decentralization, networking protocol, and application connectivity.
New Kind of Network is an open-source, community-driven blockchain project. Team members join the team on a voluntary basis.
NKN’s whitepaper was released online in Q1 2018. The development team plans to launch a beta version of the platform by Q1 2019.
Overall, NKN believes blockchain technology has already revolutionized two “pillars” of internet technology, including storage (with systems like IPFS and Filecoin), and computing power (with bitcoin and Ethereum’s proof of work systems). Now, NKN wants to “blockchainize” network infrastructure.
How Does NKN Token Blockchain Internet Work?
NKN wants to create a new and improved version of the internet. That new version of the internet will be built in blockchain technology with the goal of creating an internet that is decentralized, dynamic, safe, shared, and owned by the community.
NKN will introduce a tool called “Cellular Automata” that will play a role in several major layers of the technology stack behind NKN, including:
Network decentralization, including decentralized apps and a decentralized networking protocol
Improved underlying blockchain technology, including a better and fairer consensus model that doesn’t sacrifice node equality and decentralization
NKN will use blockchain to maximize network resource utilization and incentivize community-driven network creation, participation, and expansion
The beta version of the NKN platform is scheduled to be launched in Q1 2019. That beta version will be based on Cellular Automata and “proof of relay”. By the end of 2019, NKN seeks to release a highly-efficient and scalable version of its platform with NKN 1.0.
The long-term goal of NKN is to “blockchainize” the pillars of internet infrastructure, creating a revolutionary new version of the internet. NKN sees its platform as the third major blockchain-based revolution, with the first revolution being bitcoin and Ethereum’s “blockchainization” of computing power as well as IPFS and Filecoin’s “blockchainization” of storage. NKN will blockchainize the network layer of the internet.
Who’s Behind NKN?
NKN is an open source, community-driven blockchain project. Team members can join on a voluntary basis.
Key listed members of the team include Yanbo Li (Founder and Core Developer), the co-founder of Onchain and an open source guru.
Other listed members of the team include Bruce Z. Li (Co-Founder, Strategy & Innovation), Justin Wang (Co-Founder and Core Researcher), and Yilun Zhang (Co-Founder, Core Researcher, and Developer),
How Does Cellular Automata Work?
NKN relies on a system called Cellular Automata. That system is built using “non-von-Neumann-style” architecture to create a fully decentralized network with equal peers running in parallel. It’s a dynamic, self-organized, and self-evolving network with simple rules. Here’s the basic process through which the Cellular Automata network operates:
- All nodes are equal in the network
- A simple cellular automata (CA) rule is selected
- Every node keeps its own CA state as well as its neighbor’s CA state
- Each network cycle, the node that received data will update its CA state according to the rule and broadcast to neighboring nodes
- For each cycle, all nodes will update their CA state autonomously based on the same rule and neighboring states, with links adjusted based on their states, leading to evolving network topology without needing to change the underlying infrastructure or protocol
Cellular Automata will work in a similar way to Filecoin and IPFS, but in the network domain. Here’s how the whitepaper explains it:
“Similar to Filecoin/IPFS but in network domain, we intend to tokenize the participators’ data transmission capability instead of their storage. NKN’s file distribution ratio is to be determined.”
In other words, you’ll receive a token reward based on your data transmission capabilities – instead of your storage space as with IPFS.
Using this model, NKN will provide connectivity to participants:
“NKN will provide superior connectivity by using Cellular Automata powered dynamic and self-evolutionary network while effectively using blockchain’s native economic model (token) to motivate participants to join and expand the network.”
In other words, nodes will have an incentive to join and provide connectivity services to the network. That incentive will come in the form of tokens.

New Kind Of Network NKN Conclusion
NKN wants to create a freer, more open version of the internet. The goal is to use blockchain technology to organize and incentivize participants to provide connectivity across a distributed network. Nodes are incentivized to keep the network operational through the use of digital tokens.
The platform isn’t expected to launch (in beta) until Q1 2019, with a full version (1.0) expected by Q3 2019. To stay up-to-date on the latest news and information from the open source community behind New Kind of Network, or NKN, visit online today at NKN.org.
