Crypto Makes It’s Way Into Showbiz

With the current state of the global economy, it is safe to say that cryptocurrencies have not only arrived, but are here to stay. This is demonstrated truly by the fact that there are now tv shows and movies that have started to incorporate cryptocurrencies into their central plot. For example, Crackle (an online streaming service) has started production on a TV show called ‘Startup’ that uses a whole host of parallel storylines which deal with the future of money, and how these ‘new age currencies’ have changed the way business dealings take place all over the globe.

In the first episode of the second season, it is shown that key characters in the plot are using bitcoins as a means of transferring large sums of money all over the world. But what is obvious from watching Startup is that all of the dealings that are demonstrated in the series seem to be backed by intentions of deception and ploy. For example, it is shown that drug dealers in the series make use of bitcoins to send/receive their payments for all drug related transactions.

However, for people who actually use bitcoins and have a good grasp of how the entire blockchain system works, this show seems very gimmicky as it only portrays the use of cryptocurrencies in a stereotypically evil way. But with that being said, the writers also need to be lauded for their efforts to incorporate relevant concepts of the dark web, tokens etc to give the storyline a sense of realism.

Background Of The Show

Startup can be classified as a ‘crime thriller’ that is primarily set in the picturesque surroundings of Miami, Florida. The central plot involves the lives of tech moguls, cops, bad guys and everyone in between. It also includes a subplot that deals with a cryptocurrency called Gencoin. According to the plot, this token is being distributed by a corporation that is known to delve into some questionable activities such as drug smuggling, murder, corruption and human vices in general.

Other Key Nuances

A key aspect of Startup is that it is shot like a ‘short film-style’ series which makes use of multiple live camera angles. The overall appeal of the show is based upon its aggressive storyline, and the way it makes use of music that is not only fast paced, but also dynamic. In addition to this, there is a lot of action in this show which gives it a real ‘gritty, earthy feel’. While drama’s are good for keeping our attention fixed, so are sequences where there is action, chases, and other trilling sequences.

What Makes Startup Interesting?

The four main characters in the show are recurring in all of the series up until now. Since their interaction drives the entire plot, the show becomes extremely intriguing by the third season. The dialogue delivery and character etching has been done in a highly subtle and captivating manner. As a the show progresses, subplots are interwoven so as to keep our attention glued onto the protagonists. Not only that, each character’s life story is gradually fleshed out in more detail as time progresses so as to give us a more detailed look at the life of the people in this show. As far as the cast goes, there are many recognizable faces in the mix. Bitcoiners will be able to spot Bilbo Baggins aka Martin Freeman as well as Ron “Hellboy” Perlman in the series.

On A Closing Note

While there is fear, intrigue, drama interspersed all throughout Startup, there is a constant background of cryptocurrencies being displayed throughout the show. Startup also plays into global concerns that make cryptocurrencies such an intriguing prospect for the future.
