What to Make of Coinbase Banning The Account of Milos Yiannopoulos

Coinbase, the largest crypto exchange in the United States, has decided to ban the account of the famous far-right pundit Milo Yiannopoulos. After this has occurred, the man used social media to complain that there was only a gap of three minutes between Coinbase asking him to verify his account and deleting it.

Yiannopoulos is very well-known on social media as he has controversial far-right views. Up until some time ago, he was an editor at Breitbart News.

Most of the controversy around the ban revolves around the fact that Coinbase asked him to verify his account and decided to shut it down before anyone would be able to actually do the whole verification process, which was not deemed as fair by him and his supporters on social media.

Not The First Ban

In fact, this is far from the first time that Milo Yiannopoulos has been banned from well-known platforms. According to the Guardian, he was already banned from Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram so far. The explanation for why he was banned from these platforms is mostly as he is considered to be guilty of hate speech by the social media organizations which banned him.

According to their official responses to the Guardian, they affirmed that they will ban anyone promoting violence and hate despite their ideology. After reviewing his account, they decided to ban him.

Curiously, Yiannopoulos used the social media platform Gab to make his post. The owner of the platform, Andrew Torba, was also banned from Coinbase. Some people speculated at the time that the reason for that was because he created a platform in which people banned for hate speech gather.

Coinbase has been banning several accounts lately. The WikiLeaks Shop, owned by the nonprofit Wikileaks, was also shut down last month. Wikileaks, in case you are not familiar with the organization, is a famous whistleblower organization created by Julian Assange.
